Vaginal dryness, a touchy subject.

Vaginal dryness is a naturally-occurring condition, experienced by women of many ages. Its symptoms may include not just dryness, but itching, burning, soreness and irritation (called vaginitis), as well as discomfort during and after sex.

When the vaginal lining becomes thinner, there is a decrease in natural lubrication during arousal. The most common cause of feminine dryness is a depletion of estrogen that occurs as women enter midlife and move toward menopause, or after a hysterectomy. Other causes may include infection, loss of estrogen after childbirth, side effects of medications, immune disorders, surgery, and chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Bacterial and/or yeast infections can often temporarily set off a chemical imbalance that causes vaginal dryness and irritation (vaginitis), as can douching.

For some menopausal or pre-menopausal women, doctors will prescribe estrogen therapy, which may be provided externally through patches, creams, other topical delivery systems, or internally through pills.

For women who are not receiving estrogen therapy for relief from menopausal symptoms - or simply want a more natural alternative - the most frequently used method of self-care is a vaginal lubricant and/or feminine moisturizer. Use of water-based lubricants such as SofTouch™ lubricant can restore moisture during intercourse, helping both partners to relax and have a more enjoyable experience.

While such vaginal lubricants are most commonly used to enable intercourse, more women experiencing ongoing vaginal dryness due to menopause, chemotherapy, or other factors are using them to improve their everyday comfort, too.
